Going the EXTRA mile.

For the past couple of years my calling in our ward has been
"Sister Friendly."

It's kind of a "Special" calling.
(I think it's for the wards with LOTS of members and a BIG primary.... where they make callings so everyone can serve.)

I have actually really enjoyed it!
Lots of the children in our ward don't know me.
So when I was called, I made her into "someone."
I found this hat......

....and made an apron to match.

The fun part has been watching the kids!
The older ones have figured out "who" I am.
But the younger ones......it's still ALL magic!

I always come in late, because I have just flown in from the "South."
So, of course, I am faking (poorly) a southern accent.

And then...I tell the primary children a story from The Children's Friend.
A church magazine.

Because of the New Year, I thought it might be fun to share my sharing time.
It makes for some really cute Family Home Evening ideas!
And I always leave the kids with a small treat!

This month I chose the story:
"Going the Extra Mile."
By: Vicki H. Budge

You can link to it here.

After telling the memorized story, then I played a little game of
"Going the extra mile."
I hid notes under the chairs.
And then, I asked the child who was sitting on the chair to pick a "friend."

The Child and Friend would come to the front of the room.
Then the child with the lucky chair would tell the friend the scenario, and the friend would have to answer how they could "Go the EXTRA mile."

The magazine had a cute picture of the children in the story, and their Grandpa.
I made a little race track on the chalk board with a "Finish" line.
Grandpa had to learn how to go the extra mile and we were going to help him!

Here were the different scenarios:

Setting the dinner table.
(The child that responded said you could then, "Eat dinner!")
Helping Mom fold laundry.
Feeding the dog.
(The child that got this one said that then you could "Feed the cat!")
Sitting by a "new" friend at lunch.
Dust the Family Room.
Mow the lawn.
Shovel snow in your driveway.
Make cookies.
(This was so cute...one boy said that after making cookies....you could "make a pie!!")
Taking your dishes to the sink.

When they got Grandpa to the "Finish," I ended the story with how Grandpa took the challenge from President Hinkley to read the Book of Mormon in a year.....
But he had really gone the "extra mile" because he read it TWICE!

And this is the "treat" I left them with.
By the way....I am Truly showing my age when I bought 150 pieces of "Extra" gum.
Making little cards for the piece of gum and wrapper that says "Extra" on it...to fit within the quote.
Only to find out, they no longer wrap the gum in the paper wrapper.....just the foil!!!

SO cute! That sounds like a pretty fun calling...wish I could be a fly on the wall and hear your accent!
